ABOUT Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development(RIPED)

Founded in 1958, the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development (RIPED) is a comprehensive R&D center of CNPC for global oil and gas exploration and development. It is mainly responsible for strategic planning research for global oil and gas business development, the R&D of fundamental theories and techniques, E&P technical support for the company's oil and gas projects around the world, high-level scientific and technological personnel training and other responsibilities, the comprehensive scientific research strength of the domestic oil upstream research is in the leading position.


RIPED consists of four units: Beijing Branch, Langfang Branch, Northwest Branch and Hangzhou Geological Research Institute, and has strong human resources with approximately 2,000 research professionals, including 9 highly recognized members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). RIPED also has 17 national and corporate key laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Enhanced Recovery Rate and the National Energy Shale Gas R&D (Experimental) Center.


Through its devoted efforts in the past more than 50 years, RIPED has made important contribution to the progress of petroleum technology and development of Chinese petroleum industry. It has been involved in petroleum exploration and production researches in most of the major oil/gas fields in China and CNPC/PetroChina overseas oil/gas projects. It has established a complete theoretical and technical system of China's continental petroleum geology and oil and gas field development.
