1. About us

Directly affiliated to China National Petroleum Corporation, CNPC Engineering Technology R&D Company Ltd. (referred to as CPET) is a scientific research institute fully sponsored by CNPC, serving as a technological headquarter of CNPC, R&D center of advanced and frontier technologies, world-class technical support and service center, training hub of high-level researchers, as well as industrialization base of technological innovations in the field of oil and gas engineering. It mainly works on R&D and promotion of fundamental, advanced and frontier technologies, tools and equipment in relation to wellbore engineering.  

There are 11 R&D departments, 1 overseas R&D center, 1 experimental center, 3 subsidiaries in CPET. Among all of the 1280 employees, there are 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 candidates of “National Talent Project in the New Millennium”, 14 experts sponsored directly by the State Council, 42 professor-level engineers, 365 senior engineers, 52 foreign experts, and over 30 technologists acknowledged by CPET.

CPET has under its umbrella National Key Laboratory of Oil & Gas Engineering, CNCP Key Laboratory & Test Base of Drilling Engineering, R&D Laboratories for Unconventional Engineering Technologies (Houston), as well as R&D Center of Oil & Gas Coiled Tubing Engineering Technologies (Hubei), capable of carrying out 27 types of experiments, tests and assessments. It is also a national quality inspection center for oil & gas well equipment, a holder of oil equipment supervision qualification (Class-A) and manufacturing qualification of special vehicles.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, CPET has accomplished 23 national R&D projects and 27 CNPC R&D projects (102 tasks), winning 3 national awards, 93 provincial awards in the fields of deep & ultra-deep well development, horizontal well drilling & completion, shale gas well drilling & completion, CBM development, underground oil & gas storage construction, drilling measurement, completion & fracturing, unconventional reservoir evaluation, among which 7 have been included in CNPC’s most important ten technological advancements. There have been 268 invention patents and 25 overseas patents accepted, 93 industrial standards finalized, as well as 21 independently developed innovations published.
